Prinzipalmarkt

Prinzipalmarkt

The Prinzipalmarkt is Münster's most famous street. Tall gabled houses stand side by side, and their covered arcades let you walk and shop even when it rains. Some of the businesses here go back to the merchants of the Hanseatic period.

Useful sentence: Look at the arcades – they keep you dry on a rainy day.

The Historic Town Hall and the Hall of Peace

Historisches Rathaus und Friedenssaal

The Gothic town hall dates from the 14th century. In its Hall of Peace (Friedenssaal), negotiations took place that led to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which ended the Thirty Years' War. The Peace of Münster, also concluded here, ended the Eighty Years' War and recognised the independence of the Netherlands.

Useful sentence: This is where the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated in 1648.

St Lambert's Church

St. Lamberti

St Lambert's Church was built between 1375 and 1450. High up on its tower hang three iron cages. In 1535, after the Anabaptist rule in Münster was crushed, the bodies of its leaders were displayed in them. The church still has a tower watch – a tradition that goes back more than 600 years.

Useful sentence: Can you see the three iron cages on the tower?

St Paul's Cathedral and Cathedral Square

Dom St. Paulus und Domplatz

The cathedral was largely built in the 13th century on the site of a first cathedral founded around 805. Inside, an astronomical clock from the 16th century shows the time, the phases of the moon and the positions of the planets. On market days, the Domplatz is full of stalls.

Useful sentence: The astronomical clock shows the phases of the moon.

The Palace and the Botanical Garden

Schloss und Botanischer Garten

The baroque palace was built between 1767 and 1787 by the architect Johann Conrad Schlaun as a residence for the prince-bishop. Today it is the main building of the University of Münster, one of the largest universities in Germany. Behind it lies the Botanical Garden, laid out in 1803.

Useful sentence: Today the palace is home to the university administration.

The Promenade

Promenade

The Promenade is a ring of about 4.5 kilometres around the old town, built where the city walls used to be. It is car-free and lined with lime trees, so it is perfect for walking and cycling – just like the locals do.

Useful sentence: Watch out for bikes – Münster is a cycling city!

Lake Aasee

Aasee

The Aasee is a lake just south-west of the city centre, with a path of about 8 kilometres around it. You can go sailing, rowing or pedal boating. On its shore you will find the famous „Giant Pool Balls“ by Claes Oldenburg, created for the first Skulptur Projekte in 1977.

Useful sentence: Shall we walk around the lake?
