Halloween 2023
On the evening of 31 October, the sky was dark but filled with the gleaming light of the moon. It was a special night in West Bevern, a night that children look forward to all year long: Halloween. Five children, dressed in their most creative costumes, were eagerly waiting to start their adventure. Their father, Mr. Johnson, was accompanying them. He was dressed as a friendly ghost, his white sheet floating eerily in the night wind. The children were dressed as a witch, a pirate, a princess, a superhero, and even a small, adorable dinosaur. The group of happy trick-or-treaters began their journey. They went from house to house, knocking on doors and joyously shouting, "Trick or Treat!" Neighbors would open their doors, smiles on their faces, and offer a variety of candies and treats. Some houses even had special decorations, like fake spider webs and spooky skeletons, that made the whole experience even more exciting. After two hours of fun and a bag full of goodies, they all headed back home. Mrs. Johnson, who had stayed back to hand out treats to other children, welcomed them with a warm hug. The kids couldn't wait to sort through their loot, trading candies and sharing stories about which house had the best treats. That night, as they lay in their beds, the children couldn't help but think about the wonderful experience they had had. It was yet another unforgettable Halloween in West Bevern, and they already couldn't wait for the next one. Trick or Treat The phrase "Trick or Treat" is commonly used by children who go door-to-door during Halloween. It is a tradition primarily in the United States, Canada, and some other countries. When the children say "Trick or Treat," they are essentially asking the homeowner to give them a treat, usually candy, or be subject to a harmless trick or prank. The "trick" part is mostly a playful threat and is rarely acted upon; it's the "treat" that is the focus of the tradition. Homeowners usually have a bowl of candy or other treats to give out, and children collect these in bags or buckets. The phrase embodies the spirit of Halloween, combining elements of mischief ("trick") and reward ("treat"). The practice has its roots in various historical traditions, including ancient Celtic festivals, Christian practices, and European folklore, and it has evolved over time into the family-friendly activity it is today. |
